AQHA Ideal, The Ideal Series: A collection inspired by the art of Orren Mixer. The Ideal Series pays homage to the stunning artwork of renowned equine artist Orren Mixer (1920-2008) and his most popular subjects – horses! Each hand painted piece in this series was inspired by one of Mixer’s famed “ideal” horse breed paintings. Born in 1920 in Oklahoma, Orren Mixer is best known for his gorgeous artwork featuring Western scenes, livestock, and horses. After years working as a graphic artist and serving in the Navy, he returned home to Oklahoma and built his art studio. He rose to prominence in the 1950s and 1960s, and his artwork graced the covers of many well-known magazines, including Western Horseman. Over the course of his career, seven horse breed associations commissioned him to paint their breed’s ideal. These images are still used today and have forever cemented Mixer’s place as one of history’s preeminent equine artists. The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) was formed in 1940 to preserve and support the unique qualities of the versatile American Quarter Horse. The organization’s goal is still today what it was back then: “To record and preserve the pedigree of the American Quarter Horse while maintaining the integrity of the breed and welfare of its horses.” Today, the AQHA is the largest equine breed registry in the world, having registered nearly 6 million horses worldwide since its inception. In 1968, the AQHA asked Mixer to create a painting of the ideal American Quarter Horse, and the result is history! Today, Mixer’s American Quarter Horse Ideal still is used by the AQHA and is known as “the Mixer Horse.” The original painting still hangs in their headquarters in Amarillo, Texas. In 1993, Mixer was inducted into the AQHA’s Hall of Fame. From the Manufacturer: Breyer is the maker of the world’s finest model horses!
